You're right, there should be a road there. I put a question on a local forum, will let you know.

Only because we might need visas for Moldova. Once in The Ukraine we're just going to see where the roads take us. That we only have ten days and will get stalled at the Russia/Georgia border means we will need to make up time on the first part of the trip......it's annoying but necessary.

I meant for me :D

Should be pretty easy to find out if you need a visa, I would suppose that EU citizens can enter without a visa for up to 90 days.

I see, well I appreciate the help and your obsession! There is a possibility that my riding mate and I might take a trip to Romania either before August or just after, for a long weekend. Perhaps we could meet up for a beer, and another, and another, etc etc.

You're right, we don't need visas for up to a 90 day stay.....I doubt we'll be there for 9 hours so it'll be fine.

Am I the only one fascinated by this discussion?  This demonstrates exactly what biking is all about to me.

Got some replies on the local forum. Guys say there IS a road east of Galati (the one you saw on Google earth. Galati (RO) - Giurgiulesti (MO) It's a crap road, along to the train rails. which takes you into Moldova, and you CAN cross the border - legally that is. 2 kms later you're out of Moldova and into Ukraine - Reni. Expect the normal fuss at borders, with extra eastern east-communist salt and pepper.

Oh, they also graciously pointed out : "STAY THE F*** OUT OF TRANSNISTRIA!!!" They made a trip to Chernobyl last year and that bit of road was anything but fun.

Cheers for that. The road might be a bit rough, but that'll make it more fun I hope.  All we need to do now is find a couple of tracks to divert up for an hour or so, to do a bit of exploring, but we'll probably decide that as we go.
