Hi there,

New here, reader of Bike since 2006 (yes... I know...), into motorcycling since '03 (aand... yes... I know that too....)

Here's also a pic!
Bloke on the right is my best friend Mircea and his red 16-wheeler. When confronted he argues that my bike is pink.

Great to meet you all!

Not too bad, mate! Crap roads but hey... nobody's perfect. I live up in the mountains so there's a good share of twisty roads in any direction. Enduro would be the "sensible" weapon of choice though.

I'm going to be rding through Romania in August, on my way around the Black Sea. I might have to pick your brains about a good route from Bulgaria to The Ukraine.

Welcome.

A quick question....is this road on any route between Bulgaria and The Ukraine, or is it far out of the way?

Well it really depends of your definition of Black Sea Tour I guess..

The map should give you an idea on landscape and distances. The red circle is roughly where the Transfagarasan is.
If you plan just a short seaside route through Romania, most likely you'll be out of the country before reaching 3rd gear.

If you're northbound, the top of the mountain - Balea Lake -  is about 250 kms from Bucharest but beware, the south side of Transfagarasan - From Vidraru Lake to Balea Lake (the way you'd be going up that is) is pretty rough road.  The north side is top notch (by Romanian standards at least).

But here's a thought: Ride from Bucharest to Brasov and we can get to Balea on the north side together. You're looking at 160 kms from Bucharest to Brasov, and another 250 kms to Balea Lake and back to Brasov.

Here's some incentives: ;)

We were thinking of trying to stick to coast roads as much as possible, with a few diversions along any tracks we come across. We're fairly limited for time, having ten days to do the whole trip and there will be delaying problems at the Russia/Georgia border. We're going to blast through Bulgaria, as we can go there anytime and were thinking of taking a day to get through Romania.

OK then Mangalia - Tulcea should be the road, coming from Varna. That bit of road crossing Romania is about 200 kms.

There are no roads between Tulcea and Izmayil (Danube Delta) but there should be a ferry. Whether it's regular or not I don't know. I'll try to find something out and let you know. Otherwise you're in for a hell of a detour. :P

We were thinking of trying to hit Constanta on the first day. Istanbul to the Bulgarian border is motorway all the way, and about 2.5 hours, but I've heard that Bulgarian roads are a bit rubbish. We'll leave at 4am so that should give us around 14-16 hours of riding time, depending on how often we stop.

It would be great if you find out if there's a ferry, thanks.

No prob, I'll give a call to the port authorities in the morning. But it doesn't look good I'm afraid.

And it's only 17 kms of missing road. Fuckin' politics, huh..?

That's interesting, I'd never have thought it would be such a big problem. It looks as though we might have to divert through Moldova or bite the bullet and take the long way round to The Ukraine. How long do you think it would take to ride from border to border (Bulgaria / Ukraine) going round Moldova?

You're looking at 650 kms to Chernovtsy, accros the border into Ukraine. Starting from Mangalia. Which is a good day's ride in Romania, some 9 hours riding, mostly flat land.
Problem is main roads in Ukraine lead up to Kiev and I guess you want to get south to Odessa. So it's another some 700 kms down south. I would bugdet for three days.

If you choose to pass through Moldavia you have about 700 kms Mangalia - Odessa. But that means going through Transnistria - Tiraspol. I don't think they bombed anything in the last couple of years but... fancy a bullet up the arse...?

(break to check with Harbor authorities)
Now the bad news: I checked with Tulcea Harbor, there's no ferries...

So.. to avoid both The Long Way Round (Moldova) and the merry Transnistrian masked chaps, here's a possible route. Still means going through Moldova.

Mangalia - Galati on first map; Galati - Odessa second map

Thanks for checking with the Harbour people, I really can't believe there's no way across! Is there a dispute or something?

The Long Way Round will add to much time to the trip, so we'll have to cut through Moldova. Looking at Google Earth, it seems there's a road (E87) from Galati to Bohlrad, on a more direct route than that on your map. The only real problem with it is that it looks like it cuts back into Moldova, near Palanka, for 10km or so, so I'm wondering if there's be more border crap to deal with. This route should be apporx 600km between Constanta and Odessa.
