I often log on just to see what the "crack" is on the forum and give me penniesworth every now and then. The forum was full of laughter but also caring advice when members needed it. A web community where bikers met up and rode together which is what it should be about avoiding physco killers where ever possible :D

There are numerous topics that are covered and most are amusing but surely there has to be some kind of moderation to keep the forum in line with the spirit and intent of Bike Magazine.

I see the forum as an extension to the magazine and as such I would not expect to see certain subjects that will remain nameless on the forum that would never in a month of sundays be published in Bike Magazine, if they were I very much doubt I would continue to subsribe to Bike.

So what do others think ?

so join in - ask Bike type questions, there is a whole lot of knowledge and road testing going on here if everyone that wants the forum to be more about bikes actually asked questions and replied to em then it would change.

I do my best to stay the same I was. If I don't like a post I wont respond to it and I think if others did the same the place would be more enjoyable. But at the end of the day it is a forum and it is what we make it. If people don't post and the only people who do have negative things to say, it will be a negative forum. If we all post then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

:)

Would it not be reasonable to think that as this Forum is visited and moderated by BIKe staff and the fact they haven't said anything to the contrary, one can assume they are entirely happy with its content?

How can they be held responsible for the thoughts, ideas and content offered by adult members of the public on a open forum?

What is the spirit and intent of BIKE magazine????

I like the idea of FREE spirit, which is why I ride bikes in the first place.

We are wonderfully different, and as soon as certain rules become imposed on us, we begin to lose that difference.

'Moderate'......neither fully one thing nor the other.  Who wants a moderate bike?

If a post is offensive to someone, ignore it! or maybe the mods will remove it
(I remember Gros**er)
If you want more bike related posts, post em!

But please do not impose a restriction of one's  right to say what they feel...as karTER says ...moderators do keep an eye on us, and if they don't interfere then we can assume we are within any necessary guidelines relevant to BIKE'S good name.

What are the subjects that disillusioned you?

In Russia they are having elections today......and the moderators are all from the main party, no independant ones to make sure that voting is absolutely free from any kind of intimidation. The polls suggest that Mr Putin will win a landslide 'victory'..
hmmmm!!!!

Free spirit?

My Point is Bike go out of their way to publish a professional magazine which covers a multitude of bike related stories from the funny to the tragic, from the sublime to the ridiculous. However all such stories are written with taste and in a way not to offend the vast majority of readers.

The forum is obviously moderated at times because I myself have ensured that racist bigotry is challanged and the senior writers at bike have ensured that racist bile is withdrawn from the site.

However, recently I have seen posts on the forum that are quite frankly unbelievable and in my humble opinion should be removed literally immediately. It is easy to say if something upsets you don't read it which would obvioulsy be my first port of call however again my point is Bike should ensure that Bile is withdrawn from the forum as soon as possible.

Actually Bumpa I can quite agree with you that if a posting is so vile then it should be removed. my only concern is what exactly is vile?

I did a thesis many moons ago at Uni... BA  Hons in Social Psychology, and I questioned "What is pornography"?  amazingly most parents were happy for their offspring to watch videos (no DVD's in those days) of war films, and one in particular which used actual clips from the Vietnamese war with the Americans, showing a guy using a flamethrower on a bunker of vietcong. But ask them if they could watch a man and woman having sex/making love. NO WAY....."that is offensive & pornographic".
I don't know about you folk out there, but I know which one I would rather see.

As I do not know the postings to which you refer (don't want to either) I cannot comment on them, but am fully in favour of everyone being treated equally as long as they in turn afford the rest of us the same respect.
We had a guy a while back who always seemed to end up slagging others off, poor karTER in particular came in for some flack from him (although karTER did more than hold his own, using good manners and good arguments)...eventually this guy was banned from the forum. Shame of it was that I feel he could have been a good member if he had stuck to bikes and related matters, without it getting personal.

Differences of opinions are good, and so often we can be introduced to new ways of seeing something when our particular way is challenged.

Maybe any posting considered by the majority to be too offensive/vile would need to accrue a particular number of forum members complaining, with a warning to the poster, followed by being banned off if he/she did not realise the error of their ways.

This in effect is what I think happens, but it is the moderators who act on our behalf.
I for one have complete faith in the folk who moderate the forum, and they do listen to us.

So yes, if it is bile/vile then get rid of it, as long as we are careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I respect your views, and appreciate anyone who stands up for their principles.

Safe and happy riding

Lakewitch

Humbly suggest?

Why would anyone ever offer an opinion humbly? I've always wondered that. No point in having an opinion if you have to be humble about it is there?

;)
