Its all in the title. Wifey and I are thinking of a holiday in Vietnam in March. Would like to hire a couple of bikes and head off for a ride at some point, for 5 days or so.
Anybody been there or can give any advice?

I was there in 1999 for a while.
I only hired a scoot to hoon around Ho Chi Minh. The roads were a bit hairy. As long as you kept your wits around you and your thumb on the horn it's fine and hugely entertaining. There wasn't much in the way of right of way or any of that nonsense. Just do your own thing. Ride straight across a 5 wide lane of scoots. They'll part for you. If you wait for a gap you'll be there all day.

Hue Citadel and the war remnants museum in Ho Chi Minh were great. Cu chi (spelling?) tunnels are worth a look too.
I much preferred Cambodia myself. Although apparently it's changed a lot since 99.

I've flown over a lot of it. If you see a missile launch, keep your speed up and maneuver hard would be my advice. It kept me in one piece.

Ah, the subtle differences between a holiday tour and a tour of duty.

Irich, ... havn't been to Vietnam for over 10 years, .. but relax and you'll love it. Currently an import restriction of bikes 125cc+, .... but inside you'll probably only hire something of that capacity anyway. Check travel isurance, .. some will cover bikes upto 125cc as standard.
I was trying to get in there on my RTW trip this April, .. but it was 'No Go' unfortunatley. If memory serves me well,.. they even drive/ride on the correct side of the raod,... but as post above suggests, .... it can be chaotic, .... especially outside of the cities.
Enjoy the trip mate

Me & wife went about 4 yrs ago and went with a french company out of Hanoi; wife & I on a Minsk with guide on another. Spent 5 days going up north into the mountains staying in local hotels & with families. Basic but amazing and highly recommended. Got the name of the agency (can't remember it I'm afraid) out of the lonely planet.
Driving in Hanoi scary at first but if you're confident not a problem. Also rented scooters around Hue to explore many of the temples outside the city. Also highly recommended as gives you massive independence and many of which are virtually empty if you're not on a tourist bus excursion, often the only other cost effective way to get there.
