In recent months I`ve noticed myself having what I can only describe as "off days " with regards to my riding, and today was one of the worst,I was shite, like a novice trying to ride too fast on a bike that was too much for him,I was gripping the bars too tight ,my arms were stiff,my legs were tense,my throttle control was rubbish,I was braking too early, turning in too soon or late and then running wide, in other words you would have thought I had been riding for 30 mins not 30 years and I have no idea why.

Any suggestions?

I've had this too, I don't know why this is, but it's all in the mind...

This month's TWO mag has an interesting article about track riding- taking 3 riders, a novice, intermediate and an 'expert' and lining them up with a sports pyschiarist and Niall McKenzie to improve their performance.

As you'd expect, the limiting factor in performance is in the mind of the rider.

Can i just really be annoying and say that I have never enjoyed my bike as much as i am now (in 1 year of riding!) and feel that riding/commuting all winter has earnt me the pleasure I am having now riding on non-wet, non-cold days? ;)

And now you have noticed that your riding is not as it was, you'll start worrying about this, making the situation worse.

Try to relax, focus on the moment instead of what went wrong a second / minute / ride ago and accept your faults.

Before you know it, suddenly you will realise that you haven't had any problems riding for a few weeks and you'll be fine again.

Happened to me once too. On a trip to spain i just lost it. Couldnt ride to save my life. First few days i was there i was riding the best i ever have. Knee down everywhere possible. Leading my group of friends down tricky mountain roads... Then the last couple of days i was a wreck. Just woke up and couldnt ride. Had to tell my mates to carry on and i just caught them up when they stopped. Not sure what happened even to this day. I had no particular stresses or worries at the time. When i returned home i just went out on my own for a few weeks and it just clicked again one day. Think it happens to most of us at one time or another, for varying reasons.

All id say is just take it easy until your minds a bit clearer and your work woes have subsided. Perhaps try to get out on some sunny days alone, without the pressure of having to keep up with friends etc, on your favourite roads and build your confidence back up. Just take it easy. It will pass before long.

I get it fairly often. last time I was out infact...that whole cramp episode and all. The ride out wasn't great, breaking too late, wrong positioning for corners, erratic throttle, not so bad when you are on your own, but with the missus on the back not good, I started to over compensate & that makes things worse.

The ride home though was great though, everything just clicked & I could have ridden for hours. All very odd :)

I just don't think about it, if you start analysing everything it just gets worse.

Ina funny way, it's what defines motorcycling for me. Off days happen all the time in different circumstances; if driving a car, your off day may put you on autopilot and the little mistakes or moments of poor positioning don't really matter, or at least are easier to get away with, and you notice them less because unless you do something dreadful you're basically safe. On a bike they matter, a lot. Everything's magnified because you know that to ride well means riding safely, whether at 15mph through traffic or at 80 on a motorway, or ton-up on a track. You can only really relax and enjoy the experience when there's no concern, and any little error brings concerns because the effects are so noticeable. But once you're focussed, whether out for a blast or just nipping to the shops, eyes on the horizon, scanning everything, gears snicking in, your positioning becomes better and it all falls into place. A glorious, throttle-twisting, huge grin kind of a place :)

it happens to me most when I am tired,

I think the important thing is to realize when it is happening and to back off.

I have a couple of things I do to clear my mind and keep relaxed on me bike.

maybe it is worthwhile attempting to do the same?

Happened to me yesterday, on the first half of the ride home. Got on the bike and couldn't figure out how to ride the thing. I even made the stupid mistake of dropping it into first while doing 20mph and was nervous for the next 5 miles or so, not even trying to filter or weave through traffic. As suddenly as it came, it went, and then I was back to normal and having a laugh a minute. Still can't work out why.

As a female, every month I suffer from one of the seven dwarfs of PMT, clumsiness:) I ride like a biff and anyone would think that I had never riden before, can't seem to remember which way the gears work,:? riding position and ability reduced to below zero and it seems to take soooo much longer.

Also being tired doesn't help either, nor does being angry, tho anger usually subsides into a big grin when i open up the beast on an empty fast road:)

On othr days it feels like I could ride for ever!!:)

This is exactly why women should not be allowed to ride or drive. Or operate any machinery other than a washing machine and iron. And a cooker.

I used to be a filthy, dirty, scum courier. Riding like an arSe was obligatory.

Women always blame feelings when things go wrong, it's always the machine.

Never got on with it and coffee is just as bad.  Not a fan of hot drinks in general.
