Commuted into town mid-week & couldn't believe how many chumps on big scooters were riding without gloves / in t-shirts & shorts and a few buttheads even riding in flipflops fer Chris'sakes ...

Feeling quite smug (if a little warm) in my heavily CE-d leather jacket & big boots when I lane split 2 & 3 to wait on the white line at the traffic lights by St Thomas Hospital.  The black VW Passat in the outside lane then decided to jump the lights & rolled over the toes of my right foot.

By Hell it hurt, but no real damage done & I didn't drop the bike fortunately.  Choice hand-signal were offered though after I'd regained my composure.

Edited for spolling.

Good to hear it wasn't anything more serious.

As for riding without protection, years ago while I was still learning, I rode with flip flops and had a fall, nothing serious only bruises as I was going slowly thankfully.

But It was one of these falls that bring you back to earth and the terrible reality of what can happen if things go wrong while riding...

Some fall and learn, others fall and don't give a damn, I have met both types of riders, I'm glad that I'm of the first type.

I guess you can't be old and wise if you are not young and stupid in the beggining.

Coming home from work on Friday someone on an R1 going through Boro on the A66 in T shirt and shorts.Im not judging him, your free to ride in what you like so long as your wearing a helmet...But its a fine line between being 'cool' and having no skin left.

Riding in less than the full protection makes us look like loonies. The NHS refer to us as "donors".

if you'd been riding in flip flops (as i often do), you'd have been a damn site more careful about where you'd put your feet.

Always an odd thing this gear wearing issue.  I ride a push bike which I can get to 35mph downhill, in a bit of lycra, but if I ride the motor bike I need armour plating at the same speed...

Each to their own, if you aint wearing much protection just go slow.........

Seen a nutter near warrington today on a 125. T shirt , shorts and trainers overtaking on an island on the outside with knee almost down. Daft.

I totally agree with you on that one. On my roadie (cycle), if I sprint can get to 30+...I average at normally 22-24mph...but don't think twice about not having full protective gear, wheras won't leave home on the CBF without - boots, gloves, armoured trousers & jacket lid, back protector etc..! is a crazy world

Driving my Volvo estate today I saw a guy riding one of those dangerous motorbikes.

Idiot

What sort of moron uses a mode of transport that offers so little protection.

Surely everyone knows that it's far safer to protect yourself properly in a metal cage with airbags and impact protection bars.

Ah but of course, I forget.

It's his free choice that allows him to ride such a dangerous device, despite the fact that even in a leather suit of armour, he has virtually no collission protection.

Seriously though.

Isn't it interesting how we, as bikers, detest any hint of outsiders dictating their safety ideals onto us, but yet we are quite happy to do exactly that ourselves :?

Freedom of choice.  It's what makes some parts of the world worth living in.

Saw a guy riding a vmax in flip flops. It must hurt to change gear in flip flops. He had his UV protective sun glasses on though, so not all bad.

You got to agree that wearing full leathers looks damn cool aswell, kinda adds to the whole biker effect.

Every spring as the good weather arrives this topic pops up on every general biking forum across the land.

Who cares? Really?

We're legally obliged to wear a lid and that's it. Whining about how others dress to ride surely is the biggest waste of time possible?

You have a good point there. it does seem that most threads are started with a topic based on what is basically someone elses problem, or choice. doesn't stop it from being fun to discuss though.:D
