I am a fan but I wonder,

Are most MotoGP fans in love with Rossi due to the massive amount of airtime and the sucking up the presenters do?

Or does he get huge amount of air time and sucking up because he has a huge number of fans?

Are those the only choices? What about his talent and his results? Aren't those factors in people's love for him?

Maybe it's because he's proven himself to be the best rider of the last decade.

Just a thought.

Most folks my age don't do the 'fan' thing, but we know the real deal when we see it. He might behave like a pratt at times, but what he does and says pre- and post race isn't of much interest to me. His ability on a bike however, can only be admired and it is surely the source of his popularity.

He is a brilliant rider, dignified in victory and defeat and he has that all important bit of magic -  charisma.

He deserves all the attention that's lavished on him.

An excellent point, well made. When was the last time you saw him spit his dummy because things didn't go right? He just gets on with the job while still managing to have a personality and a bit of a laugh. He's not a miserable fecker who likes to tell people it's because he's "focused."  :?   What a load of cobblers that is!!

I'm with you on that one mate, I don't like to see the serious side of people on the grid ie. not wanting to speak to the press etc and having the staring off into space with designer shades on. I want to see them excited and happy to be there, Rossi has a smile on his face most of the time win or lose, he can have his moments like everybody, but very rarely in the public eye.

I would be grinning from ear to ear just to be on the grid and riding with all of those people, grumpy wouldn't come into it.

I'd love to have half the talent of Anthony West, never mind the rest of 'em!

as a Rossi fan you have to give the man credit and respect but i live in Ireland and when the guys over here take to he roads and race in the likes of the NW200 or Ulster GP you never here thwm complain about the lack of run-off areas especially when they are hitting around 200mph coming in to Portrush with only about 2 feet from walls and lamp posts

Different kettle of Gefilte fish I reckon. Ulster and the IOM are the 'joint' home of road racing, and although the time has gone when lots of GP riders would compete at both, we still see a few short circuit racers there, and they are of a slightly different breed.  Always been full of admiration for the guys that push to the edge on road circuits, especially now that it's getting so quick, (and aint they all such nice folks) but I can't be critical in any way of anyone who decides to give it a miss. I still reckon Uphills' achievement on a production Bonnie was one of the greatest moments in motorsport. To get round the island at over the ton on a production bike not famed for its handling, with skinny little Avons and about 50 brake was just amazing!

I watched the US Moto GP, Laguna Seca, on the telly and Rossi put passes on Stoner like you wouldn't believe. There wasn't room to make the passes but Rossi made them anyway. Amazing stuff. Some of the best racing I've ever seen. Stavros and Charlie Cox both agreed it was some of the best racing they've seen, and they've seen 'em all. Takes a lot to get that kind of praise out of them.

Rossi deserved the win because he rode better and harder. At the end of the race he offered a handshake and a smile to Stoner who rejected it in a childish way. He was beaten by a better man but wouldn't acknowledge it. Stoner might be on the way to being top of the heap, but I can't see him earning the title of great. Rossi has earned the title of great rider, and has done it with charm, warmth and personality. He's on the way to scoring the most Moto GP wins in history.

Trouble is, when people get that good there's always knockers who will nit-pick looking for tiny flaws. Everyone has them, even Rossi, but it doesn't detract from his riding genius. He can sit at my table any time he likes.

The forum's only "dead" if people deliberately choose not to put suitable threads into it.  The re-direct was left on so it's hardly difficult to find, is it?

except it's not exactly about racing, it's about a racer and why he has a adoring fans.

a definite difference, before I am accused of splitting hairs you could go on to say most of this stuff is about bikes anyway so why not dump it all in one forum?
