Hi John, i think i may have some good news for you regarding Bill Ivy. He was one of my fathers best mates and was for some time engaged to my now stepmother Ann. He was also my aunts brother. Last year i started researching Bill and now i have been very lucky to have talked to many of his old friends and racing comrades "AGO" included,. A new book will be coming out in 2009 the 40th year after he was killed in practice at Saschenring. It is being written by Mick Walker and i am lucky enough to have had him offer me a post script at the back of it. I can assure you that Bill will never be forgotten and only today i visited his grandfathers grave where Bills name has been added, please feel free to email me at bill.ivy@hotmail.co.uk if you would like to know any more, regards, gary

there is a family grave in wrotham at st georges church with bill ivys name on, however bill was not buried he was cremated and his ashes were scattered, unfortunatly the M2 motorway was built over the spot later on !! I think he would see the funny side of that !

He always had a smile, so the ashes bit would make him laugh, come to think of it I think he would be amused with all the notice he is getting now, so for today lets keep it that way and im off to the pub and have a few drinks, sheers all jj.

The New Era Club ran a Bill Ivy Trophy race meeting for many years - dunno if it's still on, but it was in 2006 :

St George's Church at Wrotham is very close to me - I'll see if I can find his grave...

Ciao John Jones, and ciao to everybody else here.

My name is Diego, )'m italian  and ) am a great Bill Ivy fan. ) was 10 when he died, but ) already was very interested in Continental Circus, because of my father who was a (back burner) racer in Italian Championship and Ivy was a template for 125 drivers. His death affected a lot of people here: think that Picture Card Panini (very famous in Italy for football players) made a serie with Ago, Pasolini, Bergamonti, Taveri and they were compelled by fans to insert IVY picture card. Ivy was a big name in "Romagna"  (and you know where Valentino cames from ...) not only for the Wordl Championship in 1967 as for his "race style".

) found this thread looking for "IVY" in internet. Infact ) won an e-bay auction for "The Continental Circus" the 1972 film about the 1969  Championship, where a lot of IVY images are shoot, and ) remembered that next year will be 40 years from his death. (on July the 12th).

) think that it would be a really GREAT initiative if someone would REMEMBER this sad anniversary with a cerimony, a Service or what else in Wrotham even if ) know that the first Service was in Ditton (st. Peter's Church), and you can see a little shoot of the Service in the Film Continental Circus.

The only thing )'m really sure is that on July the 12th 2009 ) will be somewhere near to Maidstone with my bike.

Diego

Cuthbert wrote:  Phil Read seems to be getting the wrong end of the stick in the Bill Ivy story. A lot was said about Ivy's performance at IOM-TT  in 68. Question's as to wheather Read had won the race fair and square. I was at that race. On the last lap his engine was not sounding good,  he slowed,  Read overtook and won. It was a brillant race by both riders and respect to them, they were fantastic. Don't you think you are being a bit harsh on Read??:P

Hi, I was just browsing your forum and came across this topic. it was a long time ago now but I was actually watching the 1968 125tt from Creg-ny-Baa when, on the last lap after setting a new lap record of 100.32 mph, Bill Ivy pulled in and asked who was leading the race. He waited till Read had passed then re-mounted and finished about a minute behind him but still almost 9 minutes ahead of the 3rd placed rider. It just confirmed what we all knew about  riding to factory orders but of course it was strenuously denied by Yamaha. Bill was too much of a gentleman to go back on the deal even if Read had decided to go for both championships.

Hope this helps set the record straight.

Not trying to take anything away from Phil Read, even though you are quite correct he let Bill Ivy give him the 125cc and then ignored the team posistion for the 250cc result, but all this is the Ivy story what I have been trying to acheive is some simple respect, when sad to say anything happens to Phil Read I hope his home town remembers him in a respectful way, the same way Maidstone should our only world champion BILL IVY:D.
