Got back from Cartagena late Friday night ... what a great few days, and its great to be back racing! Will get a couple of photos of the new bikes up asap ... but some of us have to work for a living!

Ben went really well ... and was faster than the last time he was there. Matt Bilton, one of the Superstock riders was also very promising, being the fastest superstock rider there ... and that was both of theirs first time out on the new bikes, which might I add, look very beautiful!

Ben has now headed to the official Pirelli test at Guadix, and was about 6 tenths off the Tas Suzuki guys, and the fastest time first time here ... whatever thats meant to mean! Dan Smith also had a go ont he Superstock bike there, and is looking very promising, so it is going to be a great season for Wylie and Holland Race team by the looks of it!

I shall continue to update, when i get it ... wish I was still out there though!

Sounds very promising, bet they wish the season was starting now.....................

Seems a shame that most BSB races will probably be colder than where they are now....................

Heres to the new season.................

Thought I would write a diary of my experience at the Cartagena test ... basically cos im bored and at work, and would prefer to do it than work ... plus for all your pleasures!

We left for the airport and managed to get there on time and for the first time ever, I didnt set the metal detector off! WAHOO! Had a leisurely walk through to the plane ... although no fags for for however long ... Grrrr! Arrived to an interesting smell in Spain, with the sun shining. Picked up the most awesome car I have ever had the pleasure of being in ... a Kia Picanto in burnt orange, with matching ornage seats .... it doesnt sound much ... but all will be revealed! (We called it Kiyo)

We then began to follow the multimap directions to the address of the villa that ben had given me ... The villa is 20 minutes from the airport ... we arrived there 2 hours later! Thanks go to the two english people in the wrong hospital that gave us directions, that still got us lost, but helped ... so thanks!

When we arrived we had a piece of toast and a brew. Thanks T Dog! and went to sleep, in the few beds that were available ... 7 of us in 3 beds! No im not sleeping with you T Dog!

We awoke early to head off to the track and get set up. We arrived to a beautiful day, eventhough it rained! We set up and got ready for the first session. Holly and I walked the track (backwards!) and were amazed at the length and amazing curves and cambers of it. A great track and some great views ... hopefully the pics (will be arriving soon) do it justice. We managed to sign on and get Holly in as a photographer too, so we both set out with cameras in hand to take some photos. Ben went out and we walked a hell of a lot to start with, until we realised that you can drive into the middle of the track! So next session we drove into the middle of the track in Kiyo ... now the "road" under the track isnt exactly a road ... its more off road than anything ... its sort of like a quarry really! Kiyo the Picanto did this amazingly and handled all the ruts and hills, and got us there ... what a car (you sort of have to experience it to love the Kia!) Holly had the video camera and took loads of footage, that I will be editing when they get back, and I have the time to do it, along with building my new website, and editing the thousands of photos i took!

End of day 1, and some great times and great work from both Ben and Matt, doing really well, and exceeding expectations. We then had to head to Murcia airport, thats actually in ST Javier ... not that we knew this yet, to pick up the lovely Flower Boy. Now, this again takes like 20 minutes form the track. We headed into to Cartagena first to get some food, and flaming coffees ... not that they were as good as we thought! Now, Ben was driving the van, and he runs red lights, and were behind, having to run them as well ... almost getting side swiped, but thats another story! We get some food and head to the airport ... Flower has already landed and is waiting for us ... half an hour Ben says ... we eneded up, in a QUARRY! it took us like an hour and a half to get there!

Get Flower and head back tot he Villa, sleep again! Get up and back to the track ... some of us were ready on time!

Another day, and again, more photos ... and better times from the guys. Ben decides to try the camera on the bike for a lap ... he broke the camera!

Time to head off home after an exhausting few days in the sun, and we managed to make it to the airport in 30 mins! YES! Board the plane and fly through the turbulance back to Manchester ... and we were lucky to land, as we were only 1 in 4 planes that managed to land into the 50mph winds! Intersting drive home ... missing the Kia ... and here i am ... back at work!

Well ... that managed to waste about 15 mins of work ... enjoy!

Ben has just let me know that they are now packed up and on their way home tomorrow ... The test went well, and they were only 8 tenths off the outright fastest time, which is brilliant, and faster than HM Plant!

Great news.

this is not official timing. We were all very happy with the testing and are feeling confident of getting abit closer to the front than last year!

Take us to the best Chinese in town we told the taxi driver. No problem he said, there is only one. "I don't think we should eat here", said Fatboy as we entered the toilets at the Chinese restaurant in Gaudix. "Don't worry" i replied, "it will probably be the best Chinese we've ever had." The toilets were bloody disgusting and the food was far worse. Me and Flowerboy both ordered chicken dishes that defied description as food. Mine surely came from a dogfood tin and his came on the bone, but not the bone of anything remotely edible. We left our meals and the restaurant in double quick time and crossed the road into a a pizza bar where some fellow brit teams and the Pirelli lads were drinking and eating dishes fit for human consumption. We ate the most fantastic home made pizzas cooked right there in the bar in an authentic wood burning clay oven and washed them down with cold lager. Another good result.
This was the last night of our stay in Gaudix, a beautiful town nestled in the mountains of Granada with a snaking racetrack that is the scene of the official Pirelli test for the tyres for this years BSB series, and the second test we had done in a week of hectic driving and practising.
The week began at 03.00 Tuesday when me Fatboy and Krusty set off from home in the shops Merc Sprinter loaded with 2 bikes, tools, tyres and spares for the long drive to Southern Spain. Not the ideal arrangement but the racetruck has been delayed at every stage of its build and was nowhere near ready to use. We shared the driving and arrived at our rented villa in Torrevieja at mid-day on Wednesday, tired but happy to have left behind the rain that had made travelling miserable all the way down through France and most of Northern Spain. The misery was of course eased by our traditional Buffalo Grill burger meal at midday Tuesday.

After a sound nights sleep on Wednesday night we drove the 40 minutes down to Cartegena circuito de velocidad refreshed and ready to start another campaign. We were met on Wednesday night by new boy Matt Bilton who is joining the team to ride in Junior Superstock. Matt has raced at club level with some success and is looking to make the step up to National level.
In the first session Ben went out first to do do 3 laps as a shakedown before coming in for a quick safety check while Matt went out to do the same before coming in for a safety. Ben hasn't ridden in anger since the last round at Brands so we thought he would be well rusty but within minutes he was going round in some very respectable times. Matt has been practising a little through the winter and looked comfortable on the bike straight away. By the end of the second day both riders were flying and posting exceptionally fast times compared to other teams present which included many of the top contenders for honours. On this showing Matt will have no problem adjusting to the higher level and should get some good results.
Cliff and Ron had flown down for the tests and on Friday night Cliff treated us to a curry in the posh end of Torrevieja to mull over our performance. Early days yet but so far so good.

Saturday, and after a lie in and a good breakfast we drove the 180 odd miles over to Granada for another couple of days testing at Gaudix with Pirelli. But first we had to find our accomodation that Fatboy had booked over the internet and that the sat-nav stubbornly refused to recognise. It didn't help that Ben didn't know if it was an hotel or an appartment! After wandering around in circles for what seemed like an age we did the girly thing and rang the number on our booking slip and luckily got a receptionist who spoke fairly good English. As it happens we weren't booked into an hotel or an appartment but a flipping cave!!! One of a group of caves converted into modern living rooms with showers and all mod cons, no windows mind.

I think Fatboy was slightly nervous on Sunday morning as we left the Batcave for the short 20 minute drive to the circuit. He had never been to Gaudix before and its a long time since he's had to learn a new circuit. He soon lost any nerves once he cocked a leg over the bike and within a handful of laps he had the lines sussed and proceeded to bring his lap times down far quicker than any of us expected.
Lunchtime was soon upon us and the arrival of our 2nd new rider Dan Smith who is also riding in the Junior Superstock alongside Matt. Dan is more experienced having done a couple of seasons at National level, last year in the R6 Cup where he scored some top results in the 2nd half of the season. Dan joined Ben on track in the afternoon and soon settled in to the bike to set some good times.
Monday saw more of the same progress with both Ben and Dan circulating very rapidly as their times came down over the day. Dan was very impressed with our 'stocker' compared to the R6 Cup bikes and is looking forwards to helping refine it further.
I can honestly say that i have never seen Ben ride better, and his times have never been so close to the Championship favourites. I think this one make tyre rule has levelled the playing field for us.
Oh yes, this was with an 07 engine in an 08 chassis, so if the new engines are a little better than last years we should be very competitive.
