:)

I notice that there seems to be more of an emphasis on second hand machinery in the last few issues.  I'm thinking specifically of the articles comparing 2/3 2nd hand machines and the fact that staffers are running some second-hand machines too.

Whilst I like looking/learning about the new and shiny stuff as much as anyone this seems to be a welcome change as far as I'm concerned.

Is this a specific change of direction now that Steve Rose is in charge or simply a happy coincidence?

Either way its welcome chaps.  Keep it up!

Have you noticed the ridiculously low milage on those bikes though? Haven't got this month's mag to hand, but they were something like six-year-old bikes with about 8,000 miles on the clock.

Is that normal?

There's loads of low mileage bikes out there driving down second hand prices.

The last bike I bought was 2 years old with 4700 on the clock. Result!

My bike was nearly 4 years old with 4,007 miles on the clock when I bought it. OK, so the gearbox only lasted to 7,762 but hey, they were a great 3,755 miles :P

Oh, I'm not complaining. I just wonder why the previous owners bought them. 1,000 miles a year, even if they only ride for seven months of the year, is about 140 miles a month. Or about 35 miles a week.

Ive had my Gixxer about 6 weeks and put 1,000 miles on it, and that's just playing at weekends. I don't commute or 'owt.

Each to their own, I suppose.

I think a lot of people like the idea more than the actual riding, and a lot of others have good intentions but run out of spare time to actually use it at the weekend etc.  Still, never mind, keeps the prices down a bit & you never know when an old minter bought with good intentions will turn up.  I'd like to put my name down for a 2006 R6 with 1,500 miles in year 2040, preferably red & white please.

I don't mind the second-hand tests too much, but they are a bit repetitive if you read the mags regularly.  Particularly bored of GS, CBR-F, SV, Aprilia and Daytona retrospectives now.  Model update / lineage spreads are good though - seeing all the Blades or GSXRs etc laid out next to each other with changes & prices detailed is interesting.

The mileages varied.

The Fazer 600 had almost 26,000 on it, the Z1000 had done 12,000, the FireStorm almost 30,000, the Blackbird had 18,000 on it when I picked it up.

The bikes are out there (I just bought an 03 Fazer 600 with about 7000 on it). And what we wanted was good, clean bikes with moderate mileages as that shows what life is like with a good one, as far as possible.

After all, if we ended up with a pack of nails and nothing to say but "this is a shonky death-trap" then (a) it's not very interesting, (b) it's not very informative and (c) we're not really talking about the bike, more about the way it's been neglected by previous owners. And while that can sometimes be the reality when buying a used bike, it's still more common to get a fair-to-decent bike that you like. That's the experience the garage is designed to recreate. Though for those 'shit I bought a lemon' moments, we have the FireStorm as well, eh Khal!

There are low mileage bikes out there if you're prepared to do a lot of leg work to get one. I bought a mint 2001 FZS 600 Fazer in 2005 and it had 2047 miles on it. The owner was one of those fellas who bought a bike assuming the mere possession of one would somehow create for him spare time (and, more importantly, a love of biking) that he just didn't have.

Yep,my Daytona was languishing in the back of a local car dealership. It had just over a thousand miles on the clock, was fitted with all the factory carbon extras, and was 4 grand. Not cheap cheap but on the low side of what it was worth two years ago when I bought it. A great buy that has done me proud. And much better value than a new bike at the time.

I really enjoy the second hand stuff.  Particulary the character bikes, cant say I'd read an article regarding a 1987 FZR600 or anything, but Vee twin sports bikes or the more note worthy 4 cylinder bikes are very interesting.

Partculary like the work done to fix them up and niggly problems that need sorting.

Also, really loved the Race bike ZX-10 suspension tuning article.  Bring on the technical detail - more more!!

Bought a bike earlier this year that was 20 years old. It had done 197km from new (and I have more than doubled that in a couple of short runs).

For me I like the new articles and the 2nd hand ones. New ones to read now, and then dig out and read again when I am thinking of buying one 2nd hand a few years down the line.

All the best

Bought myself a 2008 Bandit 650s yesterday with fairing lowers and heated grips with 865 miles on the clock 'cos I needed a do it all bike to commute on, and this little baby cost the grand sum of £3400 which is £1300 off list price, and it's only just been run in!! Result!

Yes, also a lot of sunny Sunday poseurs out there with bikes to sell when they get bored!

Grey imports tend to have been sitting around in warehouses for many moons with naff all miles on them.  Bit more of a gamble, but bargains to be had.;)

Yeah, why is it that the most expensive and trick bikes that have high spec suspension always have mile wide chicken strips on them?

Bought mine 3 years old with 6k on the clock, and more than doubled it in a year.  Probably worth £3.50 now. :?
